“They also serve,” wrote John Milton, “who only stand and wait.” It is an apt description of Joseph, Mary’s husband, the foster-father of our Lord; though his role was crucial, he gets less press than does our Lord’s mother. In our prayer life today, may we be reminded that whether our service to our Lord and to our brothers and sister is noticed and applauded by the world or known only to our Lord himself, his recognition is the only own which really counts in the end.
